"In grammar school they taught me that a frog turning into a prince was a fairy tale. In the university they taught me that a frog turning into a prince was a fact!" -Ron Carlson
Happy, because it means no more political ads! We can all go back to watching TV in peace now. (Of course the signs will take a few weeks to disappear.) The arguing over who actually won the election, however, will go on through mid-December, at least. Actually, the arguing will go on for four more years, whatever the outcome, but we at least might have an official winner by December. Hopefully. I think the recent election in Afghanistan was more civil.
Ok, ok, I shouldn't be so cynical, I know. I do have one complaint though. They wonder why more young people don't vote? Gee, let me think. Maybe it's because trying to read through all the drivel about issues and candidates is like cramming for another midterm. I have three midterms this week. Think about that. I realize school is important (though I loathe it and see it only as a necessary evil), but maybe the schools could help out a little by giving an extra holiday, either election day itself, or maybe a day the week before, to allow students some time to read some of the election stuff. At the very least, profs could maybe look at the calender as they're planning the fall semester and not schedule exams for election week? Given the choice, I think most students would choose to study for their exams, rather than study the issues and vote, as grades and GPA are probably a more immediate concern than a few propositions and superior court judges to most college students. I did both because this is my first election and I'm a perfectionist. It wasn't fun. I barely got any studying done for my film exam this afternoon. Speaking of which . . . .
But I shouldn't complain. Considering there are still a ridiculous number of countries without free elections, and I didn't have to brave terrorist attacks to get to my polling place, just a little traffic. I didn't even have to wait in line. We got it good here.
